Balinese massage

Cecile learned Balinese massage where it comes from: at a spa school in Bali, in 2018. Now she gives it half a world away, in a cloud-forest town in Ecuador.

What is Balinese massage?

A full body massage from Bali, in Indonesia, given with oil on a massage table. It mixes three things that are usually separate: long gliding strokes, firm pressure with the thumbs on specific points, and gentle stretches of the arms, legs and back.

It grew out of the island's own healing traditions, which took in influences from India, China and the rest of the Indonesian archipelago over centuries. In Bali it is ordinary: families, village healers and spas all give it.

Balinese or Swedish massage?

Swedish massage, the default in most spas, is mostly long strokes and kneading. Balinese keeps the long strokes but adds point pressure and stretches, so it feels more varied and usually firmer. If a Swedish massage has ever felt too soft to you, try Balinese.

What a session with Cecile is like

You lie on a table in the private session room at Portal de Paz, covered by a sheet. Cecile works through the body section by section with warm oil, alternating strokes, pressure and stretches. The pressure should feel strong but never sharp. Say so if it is too much; she will adjust.

It suits a day spent on the trails around Mindo: the waterfalls, the tubing, the climb back up from the river. Ask Cecile how long the session runs when you book.
