What is an aromatherapy massage?
A full body massage, usually with long, flowing strokes like a Swedish massage, where a few drops of essential oil are blended into a plain carrier oil such as almond or sunflower. You breathe in the scent the whole time and it stays on your skin afterwards.
Essential oils are strong. They are always diluted for massage, never put on the skin neat. Lavender, citrus oils and eucalyptus are common choices, and many therapists let you smell a few and pick.
What a session is like
You lie on a table under a sheet in the private session room. Cecile may ask how you want to feel afterwards, rested or awake, and choose oils with you. The strokes are light and continuous, with less point work than Balinese massage and none of the stretches of shiatsu.
It is a good first massage if you are unsure about pressure, and a quiet end to a wet afternoon in Mindo. Ask Cecile which oils she has and how long the session runs.
What aromatherapy can and cannot do
Most people find the combination of touch and a scent they like relaxing, and that is reason enough. Claims that particular oils treat illnesses go well beyond the evidence. Enjoy the smell; do not use it instead of a doctor.
